The First 4K Box Lenses in Africa: Canon Digisuper 111 UHD and 90 UHD Now Available to Hire
The Canon Digisuper 111 UHD and 90 UHD are the first 4K box lenses on the African continent. Here's what they do, who they're for, and how hiring them works.

Every big production has a handful of shots that define it. The striker's face as the ball hits the net, filmed from the far end of the stadium. The artist's expression in the final chorus, caught from the back of the arena and thrown onto the big screens. The keynote speaker's reaction, picked out from a camera platform 60 metres away. None of those shots come from a standard camera lens. They come from a box lens.
Box lens hire in South Africa has just changed. Mushroom Motion now holds the Canon Digisuper 111 UHD and Canon Digisuper 90 UHD: the first 4K box lenses on the African continent, and the only ones in South Africa. This guide explains what a box lens does, why UHD matters, which productions these lenses are built for, and how hiring them through Mushroom Motion works.
What Is a Box Lens?
A box lens is a large broadcast zoom lens built for fixed camera positions at live events. Its name comes from its shape: a long, box-shaped housing that sits on a heavy-duty tripod or camera platform alongside a broadcast camera. Instead of being adjusted by hand on the lens itself, the zoom and focus are driven from controls on the camera's pan bars, so the operator can follow fast action smoothly.
What sets a box lens apart is its zoom range. Where a portable broadcast lens might zoom 20 or 25 times, a box lens zooms around 90 to over 100 times. That range lets one camera position take in the whole stadium on a wide shot, then cut to a tight close-up of a single player or performer without moving an inch. It's the reason box lenses sit on the main camera positions of almost every major sports broadcast and stadium concert in the world.
Why 4K UHD Box Lenses Matter
Resolution is only as good as the glass in front of the sensor. A 4K broadcast camera paired with an HD-era lens produces a 4K image that can't fully resolve fine detail, especially at the long end of the zoom, where an HD lens starts to soften. UHD box lenses are designed to hold 4K detail across the entire zoom range, from the widest shot to the tightest close-up.
That matters for three reasons:
Streaming and broadcast are moving to 4K. Rights holders, broadcasters and streaming platforms increasingly expect UHD deliverables. Content captured on UHD optics is ready for that standard.
The big screens are getting sharper. IMAG screens at stadiums and arenas keep improving. A close-up thrown onto a giant LED wall shows every limitation of the lens in front of the camera.
The content lasts longer. Footage captured in true 4K can be reframed, cropped for vertical social formats and repurposed for years, without falling apart.
Meet the Lenses
Canon Digisuper 111 UHD. A premium sports and entertainment broadcast lens. Its powerful 111x zoom, superb image clarity and precise control capture everything from expansive stadium views to tight, dramatic close-ups, making it an exceptional choice for world-class live sport and entertainment productions.
Canon Digisuper 90 UHD. A premier sports and entertainment broadcast lens, delivering exceptional reach, stunning 4K clarity and precise image control. Its zoom range, optical performance and fast operation make it ideal for capturing dynamic action from every angle.
Both are 4K UHD broadcast box lenses with a built-in image stabiliser, and both are supplied with Mushroom Motion operators. The Digisuper 111 UHD is the natural choice for the longest throws, such as stadium sport and large festivals. The Digisuper 90 UHD (90x zoom) suits fast action and flexible camera positions across sport, concerts and major events.
Built for the Biggest Stages
Stadium sport. In sports broadcasting, the main camera positions sit high in the stands, often more than 100 metres from the action at the far end. A box lens is what lets the director cut from the full pitch to a tight shot of a player's reaction, and what makes replays worth watching. For rights holders producing their own broadcasts, it's one of the clearest markers of broadcast-grade production.
Concerts and festivals. At an arena or stadium show, a box lens at front of house delivers the close-ups that fill the IMAG screens, so the person in the back row sees the same expression as the person in the front. In live music production, it's the shot that makes a big room feel intimate.
Major live events. Award shows, large conferences and brand launches in big venues have the same problem as stadiums: the best camera position is a long way from the stage. A box lens lets one camera cover the stage tightly from the back of the hall, without crews and tripods blocking the audience's view. See our conference and corporate event work.
How Hiring Works: The Lens Comes With the Crew
A box lens of this calibre is not a piece of kit you pick up from a rental counter. It needs to be transported, mounted, balanced, set up with the camera and operated by someone who understands it, often at the most critical moments of a live show.
That's why Mushroom Motion supplies these lenses with our own experienced operators:
Delivered straight to your production. We bring the lenses to your venue. No collection.
Rigged and operated by our broadcast camera team. Operators who know this glass and have worked live productions at the highest level.
Packed down when the show ends. No returns, no handover paperwork. We handle it all.
And if your production needs more than lenses, the same team can deliver the rest: multicam coverage, IMAG, live streaming, photography and the final edit, all as one coordinated production. One brief, one point of contact.
Why Mushroom Motion
Mushroom Motion has delivered broadcast-grade live production in South Africa and across the continent since 2010, including the Basketball Africa League and arena shows for some of the world's biggest artists. Every production runs on our own equipment, operated by a crew that has worked together across hundreds of live productions. The Canon Digisuper 111 UHD and 90 UHD join an equipment inventory built for the demands of live broadcast.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a box lens used for? A box lens is a large broadcast zoom lens used at fixed camera positions for live sport, concerts and major events. Its very long zoom range lets a single camera cover everything from a full-venue wide shot to a tight close-up from a long distance.
What is the difference between a box lens and a portable broadcast lens? Portable lenses are smaller and lighter, built for handheld or shoulder-mounted cameras, with zoom ranges typically around 20x. Box lenses are much larger, mounted on heavy tripods or platforms, and zoom around 90x to more than 100x, which makes them the standard for long-distance coverage.
Why does 4K UHD matter for a box lens? A 4K camera can only resolve as much detail as its lens delivers. UHD box lenses hold 4K detail across the full zoom range, which matters for UHD broadcasts, high-resolution IMAG screens and content that will be reframed for social media.
Can I hire the lenses without operators? The Canon Digisuper lenses are supplied with Mushroom Motion's own operators, so they are set up, run and packed down by people who know them.
How far in advance should I book? As early as possible. The lenses are in high demand during the peak event season, and availability is limited.
