How Much Does Video Production Cost in South Africa?
Video production in South Africa ranges from R6,000 to R150,000+ (excluding VAT). Here's what drives a quote and how to compare quotes fairly.

Ask five production companies what a video costs and you'll get five different numbers. That isn't because pricing is random. Every quote is built from the same handful of decisions — they're just made differently.
Once you know what those decisions are, you can brief better, compare quotes fairly and spend where it shows on screen. This guide walks through the cost drivers we price on every job, from a single-camera interview to a full multicam broadcast.
Typical Video Production Costs in South Africa (2026)
Overall video production costs in South Africa in 2026 range from R6,000 to R150,000+ (excluding VAT, travel and accommodation). Use these ranges as a starting point for budgeting — where your project lands depends on the cost drivers below.
| Production | Typical range, ex VAT |
|---|---|
| Full-day single-camera event coverage with an edited highlight reel | R10,000 – R25,000 |
| Corporate or brand video (one shoot day, full post-production, one or two revision rounds) | R25,000 – R120,000 |
| Multicam conference or event coverage (three or more cameras, crew and a same-week edit) | R30,000 – R90,000 per day |
| Single-camera live stream | R15,000 – R30,000 per day |
| Multicam live stream with switching, graphics and a backup connection | R40,000 – R120,000+ per day |
| Large-scale multicam broadcast (concerts, sports and award shows) | typically R120,000+ per day, quoted per project |
| TV commercial | from R150,000, depending on cast, locations and media usage |
| Additional edit days (editing, colour grading, motion graphics) | R3,500 – R8,000 per day |
The biggest jumps between these ranges come from crew size, camera count and whether the production is live. The rest of this guide explains each driver.
Start With What the Video Has to Do
The biggest cost decision is made before anyone talks about cameras: what is this video for? A 60-second social cut, a full conference archive, a live stream to a remote audience and a broadcast commercial need very different crews, kit and post-production.
The clearest fork is recorded versus live. Recorded work can be fixed in the edit. Live work has to be right the first time, which changes the crew, the kit and the backup plan.
Crew: Who You Actually Need on the Day
Crew is usually the largest line on a quote. A simple interview might need one operator. A conference or concert can need several camera operators, a director or vision mixer, a sound operator, a producer and, for live work, a streaming engineer.
If your event runs long, it often costs less to book the full day than to pay overtime.
Single Camera or Multicam?
Multicam adds cameras, operators, switching and timecode, so the shoot day costs more. But for long events it can save money in the edit, because coverage is already cut or synced, and it's the only way to produce a live-cut programme.
If your event needs more than one angle to make sense — a panel, a performance, an awards show — budget for multicam from the start. Our guide to multicam production explains how it works.
Recorded or Live Streamed?
Live streaming adds encoding, connectivity, redundancy, graphics and platform setup, plus a technical rehearsal. Redundancy matters in South Africa: a reliable stream needs a backup connection, such as bonded cellular, not just the venue Wi-Fi.
If you need both a live stream and a polished edit afterwards, say so in the brief. It's usually more cost-effective to plan both together than to add one later. See our live streaming service and our guide to streaming hybrid corporate events.
Kit: Cameras, Lenses and Aerials
Broadcast camera bodies, cinema lenses, stabilisers, lighting and wireless video all affect the day rate. The right kit depends on the output: a commercial needs cinema glass and lighting control; a conference needs reliable long-record cameras and clean audio.
Aerial footage adds a licensed drone operator, insurance and flight planning. Commercial drone work in South Africa must be flown under SACAA rules, so check that any drone operator on your quote is licensed.
Post-Production: Where Budgets Drift
Editing is where costs most often grow after the shoot. The main drivers are the number of edit days, how many revision rounds are included, colour grading, the sound mix and how many versions you need — for example a main film plus vertical cut-downs for social.
Turnaround also matters. A same-week or overnight edit needs more editing capacity, so it costs more than a standard turnaround. Agree the versions, revision rounds and delivery dates in the brief.
Location, Permits and Travel
Where you shoot affects cost. A crew based in your city avoids flights, accommodation and travel days. We have crews in Johannesburg and Cape Town for that reason.
Filming on public property can also need a permit. In Cape Town, commercial shoots on streets, parks, beaches and public buildings need a City film permit — see our guide to film permits in Cape Town.
How to Compare Quotes Fairly
Before you compare prices, check that each quote covers the same thing:
The same deliverables, versions and lengths.
The crew list and number of cameras.
The gear list, including audio and lighting.
Edit days and the number of revision rounds included.
Live streaming, if needed, with its backup connection.
Travel, accommodation and permits.
Usage rights for the final video.
What happens if the shoot is postponed or the weather changes.
At Mushroom Motion we quote with clear day rates, clear gear lists and clear deliverables, so there are no surprises between the brief and the invoice.
Get an Accurate Quote
The fastest route to an accurate quote is a clear brief. Our guide to what a video production brief should include shows what to send. When you're ready, send us your brief and we'll come back with a quote built around what your video has to do.
